Spaceship DNS setup

If your domain is registered at Spaceship, connecting it to Redirect Supply means changing a few records in Spaceship’s Advanced DNS. Your domain stays at Spaceship, and your registration and email don’t change. It takes about five minutes, and Spaceship shows you right in the dashboard when the records have spread.

Before you start

You need two things ready before you open Spaceship.

Add the domain in Redirect Supply

DNS records shown for a domain in Redirect Supply

Add your domain in Redirect Supply first. Its settings page shows the records you’ll need, including a TXT value that’s unique to your domain. Keep that page open in another tab. This guide covers a root domain like brand.com. If you’re connecting a subdomain like go.brand.com, the DNS setup guide explains the differences.

Check your nameservers

Spaceship’s Advanced DNS only controls your domain when it uses Spaceship’s nameservers. You can check them in Domain Manager. If they point to Cloudflare or another provider, add the records there instead. The Cloudflare DNS setup guide covers the most common case.

Open Advanced DNS

All the changes in this guide happen in one panel.

Find Advanced DNS

Sign in to Spaceship. In the Launchpad, search for Advanced DNS and open it, then choose your domain. The DNS records panel lists every record currently on the domain.

Records you’ll see there

New Spaceship domains usually come with default records that point to Spaceship’s parking page, and the panel groups them separately. If you ever set up forwarding, you’ll also find a redirect record there. Anything on @ or www is in Redirect Supply’s way. Not sure what counts? The conflict table on your domain’s page in Redirect Supply lists every record that blocks the setup.

Clear the way

Before adding anything, remove what’s already pointing your domain elsewhere.

Remove the default parking records

Delete the default records on @ and www that point to Spaceship’s parking page. Your domain stops showing the parking page, which is what you want.

Remove URL redirects

If the domain has a URL redirect set up in Spaceship, delete it. Spaceship’s own forwarding competes with Redirect Supply for the same domain, so keeping both makes your redirects unpredictable.

Leave email records alone

MX records and email TXT records like SPF or DKIM keep your email working. They don’t affect redirects, so leave them exactly as they are.

Add the Redirect Supply records

You’ll add four records with Add record in the DNS records panel. In the Host field, enter @ for the root domain or just the prefix, and Spaceship adds your domain. Keep the default TTL.

Add two A records for the root domain

Select Add record and choose A. Enter @ as the host and 188.114.96.9 as the value, then confirm. Add a second A record with host @ and the value 188.114.97.9.

Add the www CNAME

Add a CNAME record with host www and the value proxy.redirect.supply.

Add the TXT record

Add a TXT record with host _cf-custom-hostname and paste the value from your domain’s settings page in Redirect Supply. On some less common domain endings, Redirect Supply also asks for an _acme-challenge TXT record. Add it the same way if you see it.

Check the list

Each record is saved when you confirm it. Look over the list to make sure all four are there and nothing on @ or www still points to Spaceship’s parking page.

Check the status in Redirect Supply

Once the records are in, you’re done in Spaceship.

Check the conflict table

You don’t have to wait to find out if something’s wrong. Your domain’s page in Redirect Supply shows a conflict table with the records currently on your domain. Anything that blocks the setup, like a leftover parking or redirect record, is flagged there along with what to do about it. Fix those first, and the rest is just waiting.

How long it takes

New records on Spaceship are usually picked up within an hour. Spaceship shows a propagation status icon next to each record, so you can watch it reach 100% instead of guessing.

When the domain goes Active

Redirect Supply checks your records automatically. When it finds them, the domain switches to Active and HTTPS is issued on its own, with no extra steps from you. See Domain statuses for what each status means along the way.

Spaceship-specific issues

Most problems on Spaceship come from default records or a nameserver mix-up.

The domain still shows Spaceship’s parking page

A default record on @ or www is still there. Delete it, then check again in a private window after a few minutes.

Spaceship forwarding stopped working after moving DNS

Spaceship’s own forwarding only works while the domain uses Spaceship’s nameservers. If your DNS is on Cloudflare, that’s expected. Redirect Supply doesn’t have that limit, so add its records wherever your DNS lives.

Records can’t be changed here

Your domain uses nameservers somewhere else, so Spaceship’s Advanced DNS isn’t in use. Add the records with the provider your nameservers point to.

The domain is stuck on Pending

Open the conflict table on your domain’s page in Redirect Supply. It shows which record is blocking the setup, usually a leftover parking record or an old www record. Remove what it flags and wait a few minutes. Record conflicts covers the common cases.
