Porkbun DNS setup

If your domain is registered at Porkbun, connecting it to Redirect Supply means replacing Porkbun’s parking records with a few of your own. Your domain stays at Porkbun, and your registration, renewal and email don’t change. It takes about five minutes, plus a short wait while the changes spread.

Before you start

You need two things ready before you open Porkbun.

Add the domain in Redirect Supply

Add your domain in Redirect Supply first. Its settings page shows the records you’ll need, including a TXT value that’s unique to your domain. Keep that page open in another tab. This guide covers a root domain like brand.com. If you’re connecting a subdomain like go.brand.com, the DNS setup guide explains the differences.

Check your nameservers

Porkbun’s DNS records only control your domain when it uses Porkbun’s nameservers. You can see them in your domain’s details in Domain Management. If they point to Cloudflare or another provider, add the records there instead. The Cloudflare DNS setup guide covers the most common case.

Open DNS records at Porkbun

All the changes in this guide happen in one menu.

Find Manage DNS Records

Sign in to Porkbun and open Domain Management. Select Details next to your domain, then the edit icon next to DNS Records. The Manage DNS Records menu opens, with a form for new records at the top and your current records listed below.

Records you’ll see there

Every new Porkbun domain points to Porkbun’s parking page through records with the value pixie.porkbun.com. They sit on your root domain and catch everything else with a wildcard, which puts them in Redirect Supply’s way. Not sure what else counts? The conflict table on your domain’s page in Redirect Supply lists every record that blocks the setup.

Clear the way

Before adding anything, remove what’s already pointing your domain elsewhere.

Delete the parking records

Delete every record that points to pixie.porkbun.com. Select the trash can icon next to each one and confirm with OK. If you skip this, Porkbun refuses the new records with a “CNAME or ALIAS record with that host already exists” message.

Remove URL forwarding

If you set up URL forwarding for this domain at Porkbun, delete it in the URL Forwarding section of the domain’s details. Porkbun’s forwarding uses its own records, and they compete with Redirect Supply’s.

Leave email records alone

MX records and email TXT records like SPF or DKIM keep your email working. They don’t affect redirects, so leave them exactly as they are.

Add the Redirect Supply records

You’ll add four records using the form at the top of Manage DNS Records. For the root domain, leave the Host field empty. For anything else, enter only the prefix, and Porkbun adds your domain. Keep the default TTL.

Add two A records for the root domain

Choose A as the type, leave Host empty, and enter 188.114.96.9 as the answer. Select Add. Then add a second A record with an empty host and the answer 188.114.97.9.

Add the www CNAME

Choose CNAME, enter www as the host and proxy.redirect.supply as the answer, and select Add.

Add the TXT record

Choose TXT, enter _cf-custom-hostname as the host, paste the value from your domain’s settings page in Redirect Supply, and select Add. On some less common domain endings, Redirect Supply also asks for an _acme-challenge TXT record. Add it the same way if you see it.

Check the list

Porkbun saves each record as soon as you select Add. Look over the list below the form to make sure all four are there and nothing still points to pixie.porkbun.com.

Check the status in Redirect Supply

Once the records are in, you’re done in Porkbun.

Check the conflict table

You don’t have to wait to find out if something’s wrong. Your domain’s page in Redirect Supply shows a conflict table with the records currently on your domain. Anything that blocks the setup, like a leftover parking record, is flagged there along with what to do about it. Fix those first, and the rest is just waiting.

How long it takes

New Porkbun records are usually picked up within minutes to an hour. Porkbun says it can take up to 48 hours in some cases, but that’s rare.

When the domain goes Active

Redirect Supply checks your records automatically. When it finds them, the domain switches to Active and HTTPS is issued on its own, with no extra steps from you. See Domain statuses for what each status means along the way.

Porkbun-specific issues

Most problems on Porkbun come from a parking record that’s still in place.

“A CNAME or ALIAS record with that host already exists”

A parking record is still sitting on that host. Delete the record pointing to pixie.porkbun.com on the same host, then add yours again.

The domain still shows Porkbun’s parking page

One of the parking records is still there, often the wildcard. Delete every pixie.porkbun.com record and check again in a private window after a few minutes.

Editing a record shows an error

Porkbun sometimes won’t save changes to an existing record. Delete the record and add it again from scratch.

The domain is stuck on Pending

Open the conflict table on your domain’s page in Redirect Supply. It shows which record is blocking the setup, usually a leftover parking record or an old www record. Remove what it flags and wait a few minutes. Record conflicts covers the common cases.
