What is a doorway redirect?

A doorway redirect is a configuration where a page, created specifically to rank for a search query, immediately redirects visitors to a different destination rather than serving them the content that was indexed. The doorway page exists solely as a search engine entry point, its purpose is to capture organic traffic for specific queries and funnel that traffic to another destination. The indexed page serves as a door that users pass through without stopping, hence the name doorway.

Doorway redirects are a specific combination of two problematic practices, doorway pages and sneaky redirects: each individually prohibited by Google’s Webmaster Guidelines and particularly problematic when combined. A doorway page is a page created purely to rank rather than to provide genuine value. A sneaky redirect sends users to a different destination than what the search engine indexed. Together they create a pattern where search engines index content they never show to users, a fundamental deception that undermines search result quality.

Google explicitly identifies doorway redirects as a violation of its spam policies. Sites implementing doorway redirects risk manual actions that remove them from search results, a severe consequence that reflects how seriously Google treats this category of manipulation. Unlike borderline practices where intent and implementation context matter doorway redirects are categorically prohibited, there is no legitimate implementation of a page designed to rank while immediately redirecting all visitors away from its content.

How doorway redirects work

The doorway redirect pattern follows a consistent structure, a page optimised for search discovery, a detection mechanism that identifies when a visitor arrives, and an immediate redirect to the actual intended destination.

The doorway page: a page created specifically to rank for a target search query. The page contains content optimised for the query, relevant keywords, structured information matching query intent, metadata aligned with the target query. The content is designed to satisfy search engine ranking signals, demonstrating relevance and quality sufficient to earn a prominent position in search results for the target query.

The doorway page may be technically well-executed, with genuine content depth, appropriate internal links, and all the technical SEO characteristics of a legitimate page. The content quality is not the problem, the problem is the intent. The page exists not to serve visitors who arrive at it but to intercept search traffic and route it elsewhere.

The redirect mechanism: as soon as a user clicks through from a search result to the doorway page they are immediately redirected to the actual destination. The redirect may be implemented through several mechanisms.

JavaScript redirect: a window.location or similar JavaScript redirect executes immediately on page load, users see the doorway page content briefly, or not at all if the redirect is fast enough, before being sent to the destination. Crawlers that do not execute JavaScript index the doorway page content. Users who do execute JavaScript are immediately redirected away.

Meta refresh, an HTML meta tag that triggers an automatic redirect after a specified delay. <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=https://destination.com"> redirects immediately. A very short delay, zero or one second, is imperceptible to users while the page content is indexed by crawlers.

Server-side redirect with user agent detection, the server detects search engine crawlers through user agent headers and serves them the doorway page content. When a regular browser requests the same URL the server returns a redirect response. This is cloaking combined with doorway pages.

The destination: the actual destination varies by the doorway redirect’s purpose. An affiliate product page. A different domain the operator wants to promote. A conversion page for a service. A content destination that is unable to rank for the target query on its own merits, hence the need for the doorway intermediary.

Why doorway redirects exist

Doorway redirects are implemented for several motivations, each reflecting a desire to capture search traffic that the actual destination cannot achieve through legitimate means.

Affiliate marketing manipulation: creating doorway pages that rank for product or service queries, best [product] reviews: that immediately redirect visitors to affiliate links rather than serving the review content that ranked for the query.

Reputation management: creating doorway pages ranking for branded queries, a company’s name, a public figure, that redirect visitors to content the operator wants associated with the brand. The doorway captures search results real estate for branded searches and routes it to the operator’s preferred destination.

Black hat SEO service delivery: SEO practitioners who promise guaranteed rankings for clients may create doorway redirect systems, building networks of pages that rank for client queries and route traffic to client sites without the client’s domain needing to rank independently.

Doorway redirects vs legitimate redirects

The critical distinction between doorway redirects and the legitimate redirect management that this glossary is built around is purpose and transparency.

Legitimate redirects serve users: every legitimate redirect configuration serves the user’s interest. A 301 permanent redirect from an old URL to a new URL delivers the user to the current location of the content they were seeking. A doorway redirect is inherently opaque, its existence depends on search engines not understanding that the indexed content and the user destination are different.

Content continuity: legitimate redirects maintain content continuity, the user arrives at content related to what they clicked on. A brand domain redirect delivers the user to the brand’s site. A URL change redirect delivers the user to the same content at its new address. Doorway pages without redirects

Doorway pages are problematic even without explicit redirects, they violate search guidelines regardless of whether they immediately redirect users.

Doorway pages without redirects: are evaluated by Google as low-quality, manipulative content regardless of the absence of a redirect. The intent, creating pages specifically to rank rather than to provide value, is the violation. Google’s spam policies identify doorway pages as those that:

Are designed for search engines rather than users. Have little or no original content. Funnel users to a small set of actual destinations. Have the same content duplicated across many pages.

The redirect makes doorway pages worse: adding a redirect to a doorway page compounds the violation. A thin doorway page is a spam violation. A thin doorway page that immediately redirects users to a different destination adds the sneaky redirect violation on top of the doorway page violation, the combination is treated more severely than either violation independently.

Detection by search engines

Google employs several mechanisms for detecting doorway redirect patterns, the combination of doorway and redirect characteristics creates distinctive signals.

Content vs destination mismatch: when Google’s ranking systems detect that the content that earned a search result position, the indexed content, does not correspond to the destination users actually reach a mismatch signal is generated. Googlebot’s rendering infrastructure compares crawled content against rendered content and against what users report seeing.

JavaScript redirect detection: Googlebot renders JavaScript for crawled pages and processes JavaScript redirects in its rendering pipeline. A page that contains a JavaScript redirect to a different destination is detected as a redirect, the destination is noted and the content relationship is evaluated.

User behaviour signals: users who click search results and are immediately redirected to unexpected destinations generate negative engagement signals, high bounce rates, immediate back navigation, spam reports. Patterns of these signals for specific search results trigger review.

Link and content graph analysis: doorway page networks often have distinctive link and content patterns, many pages with near-identical content structure, unusual linking patterns between doorway pages, systematic redirect patterns pointing many pages to the same destination. These patterns are detectable through graph analysis of the link and content relationships across a site.

Manual spam reports: competitors who notice suspicious ranking behaviour and users who feel deceived by doorway redirects submit spam reports. Manual review of reported sites quickly identifies doorway redirect implementations.

Consequences of doorway redirects

The consequences of doorway redirect detection range from page-level demotion to complete site removal from search results.

Algorithmic demotion: algorithmic spam detection may demote doorway redirect pages without a manual review, reducing their rankings or removing them from the index automatically as spam signals are identified.

Manual action: a manual review triggered by spam signals or spam reports that identifies doorway redirects results in a manual action. Legitimate geo-targeting: creating genuinely valuable location-specific content that serves local visitors rather than thin doorway pages that simply target location keywords. A plumber’s site with genuinely useful local content, local service areas, local reviews, local contact information, serves local visitors and earns local rankings legitimately.

Building destination domain authority: rather than creating doorway intermediaries to rank for queries the destination domain cannot achieve independently investing in the destination domain’s content quality, technical SEO, and link building develops the authority needed to rank directly.
