A domain change is among the highest-risk SEO operations a website can undergo. The accumulated authority, rankings, and traffic of the old domain are tied to the specific URLs on that domain, each URL has its own PageRank, its own indexed content, its own backlink profile. Moving to a new domain means asking search engines to transfer all of these accumulated signals from thousands or millions of old URLs to their new equivalents, a process that takes time, requires precise technical execution, and is never perfectly lossless.
Done correctly with thorough preparation, comprehensive redirect configuration, and careful monitoring a domain change can be executed with minimal lasting SEO impact, temporary disruption during the transition period followed by recovery to pre-change performance levels. Done incorrectly, missing redirects, wrong redirect types, inadequate monitoring, premature decommissioning of the old domain, a domain change can cause permanent loss of rankings and traffic that took years to build.
Why domain changes are SEO-critical

New domain content preparation: ensure the new domain is fully ready before any migration begins. All content from the old domain that should be preserved must be published at the new domain URLs. The redirect destination for every old URL must be a live page returning 200 OK. Redirecting to pages that do not exist yet creates redirect chains to 404 errors, wasting rather than recovering equity.
Redirect map creation: the comprehensive document mapping every old domain URL to its new domain equivalent. Post-change monitoring
Intensive monitoring in the weeks and months following a domain change identifies problems early and confirms the migration is proceeding correctly.

Maintaining the old domain
The most common domain change SEO mistake is decommissioning the old domain too quickly, stopping the redirects before all the equity transfer has completed.

Common domain change SEO mistakes
Missing redirects for non-homepage URLs: configuring only a homepage redirect while leaving all other old domain URLs returning 404 errors. Every URL on the old domain that has backlinks or organic rankings needs a redirect, not just the homepage.
Using 302 temporary redirects: implementing 302 temporary redirects instead of 301 permanent redirects. Temporary redirects do not transfer equity and do not trigger index updates, search engines keep old domain URLs indexed indefinitely. All domain change redirects must be 301.
